Townsville based YWAM Medical Ships – Australia (YWAM MSA) and Milne Bay Provincial Health Authority (MBPHA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) yesterday in Port Moresby in preparation for YWAM’s Training and Medical Ship to make its maiden voyage into Milne Bay waters in September of this year.
YWAM Medical Ships is a signatory to MBPHA’s Health Partnership Charter.
Yesterday’s signing further strengthens the relationship between the two organisations, working together to see quality health and community development services reach isolated rural communities in maritime areas.
Milne Bay Governor Titus Philemon said the Provincial Government is fully supportive of MBPHA in its role and is very happy to welcome YWAM MSA to join the team working alongside the PHA throughout the Province.
“Milne Bay is very much a maritime province; as such, YWAM MSA’s Training and Medical Ship program is excellently suited to serve our people,” said MBPHA CEO, Mr. Billy Naidi.
A cheque for 50 000PGK was presented to YWAM to support the ongoing work of the Training and Medical Ship program.
Mr. Ken Mulligan, Managing Director, signed on behalf of YWAM MSA. “There are significant challenges facing health service delivery to people across remote parts of Milne Bay but ‘overcoming the impossible’ is one of YWAM’s key mottos and we are humbled and very excited to partner with MBPHA to achieve great results together”.
MBPHA and YWAM MSA are looking forward to collaborating on a pilot outreach using YWAM’s current vessel, MV Pacific Link, in September of this year, before planned deployment of the much-improved replacement Ship, MV Ammari, throughout the Southern Region from late 2015.
$5 million AUD is yet to be secured for purchase of the new vessel.
