Kauei Beriri on his way to receive medical care!
Recently, Kauei Beriri of Aimei Village in East Kikori in the Gulf Province of Papua New Guinea (PNG), went hunting with his dogs to get meat for his family. When he ambushed and shot a pig that night with a knife-tipped arrow, he only wounded the pig.
The next morning, Kauei set out with his dogs to find the wounded pig. On his third attempt to shoot the pig, it came after him! Kauei turned to fight it off but slipped and the pig attacked. Kauei’s dogs managed to turn the pig to chase them instead, yet he escaped with several injuries. After a short time, a few men from the village came to find Kauei and killed the pig.
With help from the men, Kauei was taken to the Kapuna Hospital by canoe but when he arrived it was low tide, which meant there was several metres of mud to walk through to reach the hospital. However, Kauei was not able to walk due to his injuries.
Fortunately, just days before Kauei’s incident with the pig, the YWAM Medical Ship had arrived to Kapuna with volunteers from Waihi Baptist Church in New Zealand.
These particular volunteers from Waihi Baptist Church had the privilege of serving Kapuna Hospital and its community in the Gulf Province in 2012 when previously volunteering on the Ship. The team was so moved by the work of the Kapuna Hospital team that they chose to volunteer on the Ship again this year when it visited Kapuna Hospital. This time, they came with a very generous gift: a new stretcher for the hospital!
When Kauei arrived at Kapuna Hospital and needed to get through the mud, several of the community health worker students at the hospital knew just what to do. They ran out through the mud to Kauei with the new stretcher! He was then carried from the canoe to the hospital where he could be treated for the wounds caused by the pig.
Kauei is now on the road to recovery and he and Kapuna Hopsital are thankful for the new stretcher that was donated.
