After I graduated high school I decided to travel to Australia to do a Discipleship Training school (DTS) with YWAM. During the first 3 months I heard about the global health care training that YWAM offers. There had always been a little part of my heart that wanted to be involved in healthcare, but I didn’t know if it was something I’d ever have the opportunity to do.
During my DTS outreach in India, I met a little girl living on the street, she had a fever and I didn’t know how to help her. My heart went out to her, her suffering fuelled my desire to pursue primary health care. Once I completed my DTS, I signed up for YWAM’s Introduction to Global Health & Development (IGHD) at YWAM Townsville. I learned so many things, like how to check vitals signs, how to treat tropical diseases, and how to bring down a fever.
On my IGHD outreach I was able to experience and help treat basic healthcare needs for many people, especially women and children. Simply by taking one year after high school to step out of my comfort zone and into the unknown has changed my life! After taking my gap year, I completed a Birth Attendant training course with YWAM Perth. I am now a full time volunteer with YWAM, and I am continuing to grow in my love and passion for healthcare. It’s amazing what can happen when we have a willingness to serve and learn!
