Alex Norris, an optometrist from Cairns recently joined the ship for an outreach and was surprised at what he found:
“I have been amazed at how many people we have been able to help out. Many of the people we help by supplying spectacles to know full well they have vision problems but simply can’t afford to access the services they need.”
Alex also was able to help a person with special importance to the team:
“Our first day of eye testing was at a school in a slum area of Port Moresby. After a whole day of seeing kids, a few adults lined up, the last man being our bus driver for the day. He complained his glasses weren’t working. Indeed he wasn’t seeing too well with them at all. We were able to find him a pair of glasses that worked much better, and he drove the whole optometry and medical team home with a big grin and a thumbs up. The ride wasn’t much smoother, but we did feel safer.”
