TryTime!, a collaboration between North Queensland Toyota Cowboys, Education Queensland and BHP Billiton Cannington, recently teamed up with YWAM Townsville at Kirwan High. The Try Time! Program, established in 2012, focuses on delivering positive health, lifestyle and educational messages to primary and secondary schools across regional North Queensland.
The morning was spent running through drills with representatives from the Cowboys Under 20’s squad, including captain Daniel Beasley. The students took part in team building activities and developing more of their footy skills.
After the drills concluded the students heard from YWAM Townsville Youth Coordinator, Fiona Saxby, about the influence we have in social media and how to take responsibility for what we do online. Fiona stated, “We have the capacity to live our lives to the fullest and impact others through social media.” As she shared statistics facing Aussie youth, and the amount of bullying through social media; it sparked discussion amongst the group. Using personal stories as examples brought new perspective on social media and how we can use our influence. Daniel Ritchie, grade ten, said in regards to the statistics shared that it was “eye opening and shouldn’t be like that.”
Try Time! will continue to work in regional schools and cover topics such as “Eat Well, Play Well, Stay Well”, teamwork, goal setting, leadership and career pathways.
