A local pastor came over to a member of the YWAM Medical Ship team and asked them to see a patient. At 17 years old, this young woman had given birth to a baby who died immediately and for two months since the death, she had not left the house.
When the team arrived, the healthy young girl was sitting quietly. After a medical exam and treatment for anemia, she was otherwise given a good bill of health. Customs in this area determine that after the birth of a baby, a woman would stay in the house for three weeks, but two months was considerably longer.
Discussions with the girl and her family indicated that she was not suffering from post-partum depression either.
Puzzled, Medical Coordinator Hannah Peart began to ask further questions. What evolved was an amazing time of grief counseling in which the girl began to come to grips with the loss of her baby and how to begin to move on.
There is a great need for holistic health care in these isolated places and what a privilege to have volunteers who are willing to go the extra mile to see people’s lives and hearts restored.
