Watching your own child suffer can be one of the hardest things to go through. For Mara and Sinamy Soia, it was no different when their son, Joshua, contracted meningitis last year.
Joshua, who is just 6 years old, had developed disfigured limbs as a result of the disease. They took him to the hospital in Kikori (which isn’t like hospitals in the western world) to see if they could find any help for him.
Angelique, a Volunteer nurse from the YWAM Medical Ship, was visiting the hospital and met Joshua. He was on feeding tubes and making slow progress, so she ended up going back the next day to help out. Angelique specializes in pediatrics and so she was able to fit Joshua with splints for his arms, as well as taking him through physiotherapy.
Angelique also took the time to teach the Doctor and nurses caring for Joshua how to make and use the splints. She taught them, and Joshua’s parents, some physio exercises to do with Joshua, so that they could continue to help Joshua heal after Angelique had gone.
One of the nurses commented, “It is good for us to learn this so that when similar kids come to the hospital, we can help. Thank you so much for your help.”
