A Story From A Local PNG Dentist
We have the privilege of working alongside local health care professionals in Papua New Guinea, such as Hilda Audubo, from Morobe Province. Hilda recently joined us again for Outreach in the Gulf Province. Below, she shares a story of what she has seen in recent years of working aboard YWAM Medical Ships.

It
has been such an amazing journey to be part of YWAM Medical ship outreaches since 2011. One of the very first remote villages we went to was Karati village here in the Kikori area.
Back then, straight out of dental school, after my internship/ residency program I came to Karati village on the Pacific Link as a volunteer and I remember the amount of retained roots and the alveolar flaps I had to raise in a single day’s work around this area. It was an awesome and fun experience. Every year since then, the medical ship visited this village.
This week marks five years since I went to Karati and now I have had another opportunity to come back to this very place on a much bigger and better clinic on-board MV YWAM PNG, during the sail here, I was chatting with my Norwegian friend and colleague about the kind of cases we would be getting here…which would be mostly retained roots. On the first day we both went up on shore to do source patients and guess what! The people had improved oral health! This just goes to show how very basic health education goes a long way to improve health status and empower the lives of the people. This has inspired me so much that positive change is possible.
