Delma’s new specs

One of the days I (Jennifer Perry) was working with the optometry team, I was stationed at the database, where my job was to find prescription spectacles for patients that had just seen the optometrist to get their prescription. During the afternoon, this lovely lady named Delma came through to the clinic. She was wearing a gorgeous flowered dress and I remember thinking that her personality matched it! Delma is the wife of the headmaster of the school here in this village and she was just so full of life. I soon found a pair of glasses that worked for Delma and she was happy to receive them.
I then brought Delma outside to make sure she stopped to talk with Joanna and Nick, who were doing some filming for promotional material. They filmed Delma putting on her new glasses and you could tell by her massive smile that she was so happy! I couldn’t help giving her a hug because she was just so affectionate and Joanna joined me in hugging her. Before we knew it, Delma was in tears. She was just so overjoyed with receiving her new glasses and by the love that she was receiving from us. She just kept saying “thank you, God bless you” as she tried to compose herself. Joanna and I were so surprised by her reaction.  I just couldn’t help hugging her even tighter.
As Delma walked off a few minutes later, Joanna and I stood there drying our own tears. I was just blown away by how deeply Delma was touched by receiving a simple pair of prescription glasses. That moment will be one that she always remembers, and I feel so honoured to have been a part of it. Who am I, that I would get to help touch lives like this?
