Getting a birthday present for Dad can be hard. Sometimes we default to getting tools for his shed or accessories for his car. Other times, it’s just easier to get him some chocolates.
For siblings Evelyn, David, Peter, Benjamin and Joshua, they wanted to make their dad’s upcoming 50th birthday was one he would never forget. So instead of buying tools, or something for his car, the Holmes siblings collected new toys and school supplies for children in need.
That might not mean much to some dads, but for the past five years, their father, Dr Daryl Holmes, has helped to deliver dental healthcare to the people of Papua New Guinea; so as a way of commemorating his birthday and his volunteer work, the Holmes siblings decided to collect items he could take on his next voyage on the YWAM Medical Ship.
Lisa Holmes said that the couples’ children always talk about their father’s work in PNG and appreciates what it has taught them. “YWAM MSA gives our children the opportunity to focus on other people.”
The importance of giving is a value the Holmes family practice together, and cultivate in their children.
“PNG is a place they want to go to help other people,” Lisa said. “They are aware of the needs of the children in PNG and always talk about helping them.”
Certainly, this birthday gift is one that not only touched Daryl on his special day, but also made a lasting impression on the entire family.
Are your kids interested in helping others and looking for a way to start? Just like the Holmes kids, a great way that your kids can get involved is by organising toothbrush or soap collections. YWAM MSA also offer short-term “Youth Adventures” mission trips for 12-17 year olds in Papua New Guinea.
