22 July 2013 – Steamships employees will be smiling today as they are invited to come onboard the YWAM Medical Ship for oral health care treatments and education during YWAM’s second annual Port Moresby Outreach. YWAM Medical Ships – Australia’s (YWAM MSA) doors will be open all week to the employees of its largest supporter in PNG.
Steamships has provided critical cash and in-kind support for the vessel over the past two years, including hosting the Ship at their wharf between visits to remote areas of the Gulf and Western Provinces. The support of Steamships along with YWAM MSA’s other valuable supporters is a monumental reason why 129,109 training, health and community development services have been provided in PNG so far.
Many of the Steamships employees will receive treatment from Dr Daryl Holmes, founder and Managing Director of 1300SMILES in Australia, who volunteers with YWAM in PNG every year, while also helping to develop long-term training and service delivery strategies.
“This is one of the best ways we can say thank you to Steamships for all they’ve done to provide us a home in PNG,” said Dr Holmes. “I can’t tell you how much it means to see these hardworking people come out with a big smile on their face, especially for some who have been in incredible amounts of pain for a long time.”
The Medical Ship arrived back from its last outreach in the Gulf Province two weeks ago; three more outreaches are planned for the Western Province this year as well.
YWAM MSA is actively helping to develop communities in PNG through addressing health care and training needs, alongside the priorities and vision of the PNG National Health Plan and the UN’s Millennium Development Goals.
This week in Port Moresby, YWAM MSA will be running optometry clinics in association with Brien Holden Vision Institute Branch, PNG Eye Care at Kila Kila Urban Clinic from 9am-4pm on Monday, 22 July, Thursday, 25 July and Friday, 26 July. Primary health care clinics will also be offered in Port Moresby as part of the outreach, as well as health promotion classes and religious education programmes running across a range of schools in the city.
