Over 70 volunteers from twelve nations boarded the MV YWAM PNG this weekend in preparation to set sail early Saturday morning to deliver vital healthcare and training services to some of the most remote communities in Papua New Guinea. This deployment, in close collaboration with the Western Provincial Health Authority, marks a significant moment in PNG’s 50th anniversary year, honouring a legacy of service and partnership in health and development.
This milestone voyage falls at the conclusion of a significant week as the nation honours the legacy of the late Grand Chief Sir Julius Chan, whose leadership over decades helped lay the foundation for Papua New Guinea’s growth. His vision for a prosperous and healthy PNG aligns with YWAM Medical Ships – Australia & PNG’s (YWAM MS) mission to empower healthy lives and communities for a healthy nation.
Mrs. Rachael Marape, YWAM MS Co-Patron and Prime Minister James Marape’s wife, commended the volunteers and the ship’s impact, stating, “The heart of Papua New Guinea is found in our people, and their generosity of service to one another. With over a third of the volunteers aboard being from our nation, this mission is a testament to the strength of partnerships and the shared vision of a healthier PNG. We reflect on Sir Julius Chan’s legacy as we continue working together for the good of our communities.”
Mr Charles Abel, YWAM MS Co-Patron and former Deputy Prime Minister, also reflected on the significance of this journey. “Sir Julius Chan was a leader who believed in the power of working together to build a better nation. As we commemorate PNG’s 50th year, it is fitting that the MV YWAM PNG continues to serve in this way—bringing hope, health, and practical solutions to our people in rural areas.”
Ken Mulligan, YWAM MS Managing Director, emphasised the YWAM MS’ desire for sustainable change. “This voyage is about more than delivering medical care—it’s about standing alongside communities, listening, and working together for long-term impact. With so many Papua New Guineans among our volunteers, this is a mission from the heart of PNG, for the people of PNG.”
As MV YWAM PNG sailed into Western Province during the solemn time of mourning, this deployment stands as a quiet reflection of the spirit of unity, service, and perseverance that has shaped Papua New Guinea’s journey. The dedication of volunteers and local partners embodies the nation’s deep-seated values of care, resilience, and community—principles that have guided PNG through its history and continue to do so in this time of remembrance.
