Mocom Australia and Henry Schein Halas recently teamed up to fit out the YWAM Training and Medical Ship’ onboard clinics with two new B Futura 22 autoclaves – a donation valued at $27,200.
The MV YWAM PNG departed her home-port of Townsville at the end of July after two months undergoing scheduled maintenance and re-stocking and is now back in Papua New Guinea. The team onboard have just complted their first outreach of the 2018/2019 deployment in partnership with Morobe Provincial Health and Finschhafen District Health teams.
The onboard dental clinic sees up to 40 patients per day and the day theatre sees up to 12 patients for sight-restoring eye surgery per day during ophthalmic outreaches. These new autoclaves will ensure that instrument processing and sterilisation times do not limit the number of patients that dental and ophthalmology teams can see.
YWAM Medical Ships’ Clinic Manager, Melissa Kauk, said that she was very excited for the addition of these units to the onboard sterilisation area.
“Every contribution really does help us work toward a shared vision; healthy villages and a healthy nation.
“In short, these autoclaves will greatly increase the efficiency of the very essential sterilisation processes for these teams.”, Melissa added.
In addition to dental services, collaborative teams in Finschhafen District of Morobe Province delivered child and maternal health services, eye care, health education, diagnostic services, water and sanitation projects, and collegial support and mentoring for local health workers.
Mocom Australia Sales Managing Director and Owner, Hayley Avery, said she was pleased to support YWAM Medical Ships work in Papua New Guinea (PNG).
“YWAM Medical Ships has a wonderfully innovative approach when it comes to reaching isolated communities in PNG and we are happy to be a part of that,” said Hayley.
The MV YWAM PNG will be in Papua New Guinea for around 9 months, working in seven different provinces. Healthcare professionals, mariners and general volunteers are invited to volunteer aboard the vessel throughout the deployment.
