The YWAM Medical Ships Townsville City Campus was a hub of vibrant activity bright and early on Friday morning for YWAM’s annual fundraiser, “Breakfast by the Sea”.
Over 700 people came together to celebrate Townsville’s important relationship with Papua New Guinea (PNG) while raising funds for YWAM Medical Ships’ next deployment to PNG.
The morning included entertainment, dynamic Papua New Guinean cultural performances, a walk through of a model PNG village, and inspirational stories of lives that have been touched.
Honoured guests in attendance included PNG’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Treasury, Honourable Charles Abel, PNG’s Minister for Health, the Honourable Dr Sir Puka Temu, Australia’s Minister for Regional Development, Territories and Local Government, the Honourable Dr John McVeigh, Federal Member for Herbert, Ms Cathy O’Toole, and YWAM Medical Ships’ PNG Patron and former Prime Minister for PNG, The Right Honourable Sir Rabbie Namaliu.
YWAM Medical Ships Managing Director, Mr Ken Mulligan, said it was special to host the Breakfast by the Sea at the YWAM campus this year.
“YWAM has been in Townsville for 26 years now. It has been quite the journey from starting in a small house in West End, to this beautiful campus in the city, and the YWAM Medical Ship in Townsville’s port. This growth really represents greater outcomes for the community.
“Since we took on the campus in the city five years ago, there’s been a lot of re-development that has taken place to help make it into a hub for service and training in PNG and throughout North Queensland – so many from our city have contributed.
“We would not be where we are today without the support of so many from the Townsville community. We are so proud to be based here, I hope that our guests felt equally proud as we highlighted the thousands of lives that have been assisted in North Queensland and hundreds of remote villages in PNG,” said Mr Mulligan.
Strategic meetings centred around strengthening the links between North Queensland and PNG continued throughout the day to help maximise from the significant amount of business, industry and political leaders attending the Breakfast by the Sea. Additional events included round table discussions facilitated by Townsville Enterprise Emerging Leaders, and the Australia PNG Business Council Meeting.
The YWAM Training and Medical Ship, MV YWAM PNG, is in Townsville for maintenance and re-stocking before she returns to PNG for her next deployment at the end of July.
