Growing up in Delta Fly District, a remote area in Western Province where rivers and tides dictate access to essential services, Anna was profoundly influenced by her brother, a Community Health Worker (CHW) at Emeti Health Centre. Her brother, a devoted hero to his district, has collaborated with numerous outreach and patrol teams facilitated by YWAM Medical Ships (YWAM MS). Witnessing the commitment of healthcare teams who overcame the challenges of reaching isolated villages, Anna felt a deep calling to make a difference in her own community.
This calling led her to pursue training with YWAM MS, including the Introduction to Global Health and Development course, which further equipped her with the leadership skills and knowledge needed to better serve her community. She is now advancing her education by applying for CHW school, confident that the training and experience she has gained will strengthen her application.
When asked why she wanted to become a CHW, Anna said, “I love to work in the rural areas helping small children and mothers.” This passion for rural service, combined with her empathy for those in need, motivated her to take on the challenges of the training.
Her experiences on patrols with YWAM MS have been both challenging and rewarding. “It’s challenging when mothers are suffering…but I like to be able to help people,” Anna shared. These experiences have only strengthened her resolve to serve those who are most vulnerable in her community.
Anna’s aspirations go beyond her current role. She has a strong desire to work in the Bamu area after completing her CHW training. “I want to help my people,” she said, underscoring her deep commitment to the well-being of those in the most remote and underserved areas.
Anna’s story is a powerful reminder of the ripple effect that outreach programs can have. She is not just a beneficiary of YWAM MS’ collaborative efforts, but is now an active participant in the vision to bring health and hope to the rural majority.
