The day before I flew to Australia for my DTS, I remember staring at the Bible wishing I had memorised more, read more, and knew more. I thought to myself, if only I knew what I needed to know then I would have felt more prepared!
1. You know less than you even realised
There’s something about moving in with heaps of people from all over the world that makes you realise exactly how unaware you are. That might sound terrible but it’s actually liberating. You realise that no matter where you are in life theres more to learn, deeper realisations to grasp, and that life can never truly be boring if we continue adventuring and learning more.
2. It’s uncomfortable
Whether you’re 18, 45, or 60 I would imagine that you have some level of comfort in your life. Maybe you are use to waking up everyday with a set schedule of classes, all your friends gathered at the same lunch table, and the same Friday night football game plans you’ve had for years. Maybe you’ve been working a similar job or have always lived in a brick house? Either way – as humans we gravitate to comfort. If that wasn’t true then we wouldn’t spend $100’s of dollars on airconditioning so we can sleep better at night. DTS has a way of bringing people from all over the world in one place to work together. You’ll be outside of your comfort zone, learning, and be challenged every single day. As comfortable as we like life to seem, it’s actually not in our favor. Life is uncomfortable and if you want to make the most of it then you have to learn how to navigate uncomfortable situations and feel secure in who you are. DTS will make that happen in a totally positive environment!
3. You’ll probably feel like you’re losing yourself
After a few weeks you’ll start to realise that new habits are taking shape in your life, good habits. You might feel like your feet are slipping but in reality you are just building incredibly strong foundations for whatever your next step is. Hang in there – you won’t regret it.
4. Six months isn’t really that long
It might seem like an eternity but trust me it’s not! Soak it up, embrace every moment (even the hard ones!) You’re making friendships that will last forever and bettering yourself for your own future.. don’t miss it!
5. Less is more.
Pack less and experience more. The last thing you want is a heavy suitcase weighing you down. Whatever you have packed – bring half! In a similar sense – don’t try to process and figure out every detail of your faith or life in 6 months. Remember the tools you are being equipped with to make decisions, build great habits, and set foundations. It’s a launching pad, not a landing zone. Soak up everything you can and while you’ll learn a lot of new things, remember that when figuring out the details… less is more. Less of your over analysing and more trusting God. Now you know – what are you waiting for?!
