The Darwin team started the last week off with Bump In at Stable on the Strand which involved setting up the scenery to create the historic town of Bethlehem. Stable on the Strand started a few days later with the team dressing up, and playing the role as different characters in Bethlehem – Bakers, Guards for the amphitheater, animal handlers, brides/bridesmaids/grooms for a Jewish wedding, etc. The week went by and the team stayed back on the last night and helped with Bump Out which was packing away the set and making sure there wasn’t anyone left doing something on their own. Stable as a whole was a great opportunity for people to hear about the story of Jesus, and for the team to have good conversations with locals and backpackers that came through. One of the students, Jono, shares about his experience with Stable on the Strand.
“This was my first year helping with Stable on the Strand. I didn’t really know what to expect or how I could help out, but the leaders were great- they found roles for me to help in that suited me well. Our outreach group helped setting up the town of Bethlehem along with other volunteers from the local churches. During the week I was put into the roles of a Jewish wedding dancer and a balloon tying clown, both of which I had zero experience doing. I was a little unsure of what to do at first but it was easy to catch on with the help of others. By the end of the week I could dance and tie balloons. It was a great opportunity for me to meet and serve many people from the community. I also really enjoyed getting to work with Christians from all over Townsville; it was a great experience.
They celebrated Christmas with everyone back at the YWAM center and went back into a new week of Outreach starting practicing new dramas, skits and seminars to share at youth groups and schools. Also a few of the students from the team had a chance to share their personal story to a newly formed church, and to people on the street about their faith, their love for Jesus and what they’ve learned through it. They are looking forward to what the New Year has in store for them.
Happy New Year from all of them!
