Illiteracy is a common occurrence in PNG’s Gulf Province. Most people who come to see our health workers will take the time to have someone write their name and age on the palm of their hand before they come so they can properly register with our health care providers.
When Sydney-based dental assistant, Ally finished with a patient and saw him holding out his hand to her, she presumed he was going to tell her his name or age.
“This boat…?” he said as he held out his palm and pointed for her to read…
“Amazing,” was written on his hand.
Ally was overcome with emotion as she considered the effort he would have gone to in asking someone to write a note of gratitude knowing that he was about to receive such wonderful care.
Amazing, indeed
