Pacific Maritime Training College (PMTC) has teamed up with YWAM Medical Ships Australia & Papua New Guinea (YWAM MS) to strengthen maritime training in Papua New Guinea.
PMTC trainers will facilitate maritime courses onboard the YWAM Training and Medical Ship, MV YWAM PNG, over the next several months during the ship’s deployment to rural communities in Western Province, and in Port Moresby.
Students participating in the courses will become members of the MV YWAM PNG deck and engineering crew – giving them the unique opportunity to gain practical experience and sea time while helping to reach isolated communities with healthcare and training.
PMTC President, Mr Gabriel Magyari, said that the MV YWAM PNG is an excellent platform for training.
“This is a great opportunity for students to combine classroom learning with hands-on application on a fully operational vessel at sea.
“To be able to combine learning with mission also adds greater depth to our students’ experience. We hope the students will complete their course not only with a qualification, but a greater passion for the industry and compassion for rural communities,” said Mr Magyari.
The collaboration started this week with a Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) full course. PMTC instructors are facilitating the course aboard the MV YWAM PNG while it is anchored in Port Moresby.
20 students are participating in the SOLAS course, including 13 PMTC students, and seven YWAM MS crew members.
MV YWAM PNG Captain, Captain Jeremy Schierer, said the collaboration benefits both PMTC and YWAM MS.
“Pacific Maritime Training College generously donated the SOLAS course tuition fees to our crew members who have been volunteering with us for several months.
“To be able to work together to further upskill our crew and equip more seafarers that will serve throughout PNG is a win-win.
“There are great outcomes to be achieved as we work together in providing quality training,” said Captain Schierer.
Enrolments are now open for the Engineer 5 and Mate 5 courses that PMTC will be running aboard the MV YWAM PNG from April 12th for 4 months. Aspiring seafarers who are ready to advance their qualifications are advised to immediately register their interest with the Pacific Maritime College (www.pacificmaritimetrainingcollege.com) or contact the college on +675 7207 7002 or +675 7592 2400 or email pmtcregistrarhk@gmail.com or pmtcreception@gmail.com
The MV YWAM PNG will be in Port Moresby for another week before she begins her next deployment to Western Province.
