After twelve years of operations in Papua New Guinea (PNG) with training and medical ships and land-based teams, YWAM Medical Ships – Australia & PNG (YWAM MS) has established a training and outreach satellite campus in Port Moresby for the facilitation of vocational training. This facility also functions as a fixed-base and forward operating location to build stronger engagement in PNG.
The YWAM MS Port Moresby satellite campus, affectionately called “The Jetty,” is located on 3,400 square metres of land five kilometres from Port Moresby’s city centre. The property was originally built as a water sports complex for the South Pacific Games in 2015. Renovations are ongoing, and the property has been repurposed as a vibrant training campus and outreach hub.
The Jetty carries YWAM’s unique Christian ethos: a dynamic, live-learn, multicultural campus that provides young people a platform to grow and flourish in their unique purpose and strengths with the goals to:
- Extend opportunities for quality education
- Grow a highly-skilled workforce
- Develop young people holistically in their character, knowledge, skills and faith
- Match education with real needs in PNG
One of YWAM MS’ distinctives is the close link between classroom training and on-the-field practical application, giving students the opportunity to serve communities while gaining hands-on experience in their chosen vocation. Field assignments will be linked with YWAM MS outreach programs.
The Jetty contributes toward the broad goals and principles of the National Youth Policy and the Higher and Technical Education Plan of PNG, seeking to provide the skills, knowledge and innovation needed for PNG’s sustainable development.
