During the YWAM Training & Medical Ship’s, MV YWAM PNG, recent two week patrol to communities along the Bamu River, the team discovered a high amount of malaria cases across several villages.
830 cases of malaria were tested and treated by the YWAM team, and hundreds more cases were suspected.
At the conclusion of the patrol, an outbreak report was submitted to the Western Provincial Health Authority and Middle Fly District Health team.
Middle Fly District Director of Nursing Services, Mr Suli Ilumi, said that the Middle Fly District Health team responded to the report by deploying a team to the affected areas along the river.
“After receiving YWAM’s report, we took action by testing more people, providing treatment and delivering education in the affected areas.
“We also did water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) activities – including teaching on handwashing, setting up tippy taps in communities, and providing soap,” said Mr Ilumi.
In-country Field Planning Coordinator, Ms Hannah Peart, said that they were so pleased that further help has been given to the affected communities.
“We all do our part to help strengthen healthcare delivery in rural and remote areas – this is another great example of working together to see good outcomes for communities,” said Ms Peart.
The MV YWAM PNG and her team of volunteers are currently serving villages close to the Indonesian border in Western Province.
