A 60 year old man was carried by his daughter to the YWAM Medical Ship last week because he couldn’t walk. The woman brought him to a clinic to see if the YWAM health care team could assist.
The man, who hadn’t been able to walk or sit for the last 18 months, could only lie on his side because of the pain in his back. He would have to crawl when he needed to move around.
His back was examined and Dr Kenneth Wilkie concluded that he had lower back tenderness. Even though he still had relatively good hip movement, he couldn’t fully extend his hips, which prevented him from standing up straight.
The physiotherapist, Stephanie Kok, continued to help him by functionally testing what he was still able to do. With help, they were able to get him to sit, then stand, and finally, take a few steps.
Afterward, Stephanie instructed the daughter on how to train her father in building muscle strength, which would greatly improve his ability to live independently.
