Today, the Morobe Provincial Government presented a cheque for K500,000 to YWAM Medical Ships, fulfilling a pledge toward operational funding for the YWAM training and medical ship, MV YWAM PNG.
The cheque was presented by the Morobe Province Governor, Honourable Ginson Saonu, this morning in Port Moresby.
Governor Saonu said that the partnership between YWAM Medical Ships and the Morobe Provincial administration was assisting to bridge a critical gap in basic health service delivery in remote rural locations while simultaneously strengthening the province’s health system.
“YWAM Medical Ships teams continue to come alongside our rural health teams to facilitate collaborative patrols.
“An example of this was YWAM Medical Ships assistance with the second round of our polio vaccination campaign in August. The extra support on the field gave a great boost to our hard-working health workers.
“Together our teams have touched thousands of lives – this is a special partnership that I’m proud to see continuing,” said Governor Saonu.
YWAM Medical Ships has been deploying the YWAM Training and Medical ship, MV YWAM PNG, and land-based teams to remote areas of Morobe Province since 2015.
In collaboration with Morobe’s provincial and district health teams, over 19,000 patients have received healthcare and training – including a young mother named Sarah* who was saved from a life-threatening abscess after a simple dental procedure in August this year.
YWAM Medical Ships Managing Director, Mr Ken Mulligan, said that the Morobe Provincial Government’s support has enabled them to help people like Sarah.
“Our partnership is benefiting many people in remote areas of the province. It was wonderful to see Morobe’s support re-affirmed today.
“We are very grateful for Governor Saonu’s strong leadership and support,” said Mr Mulligan.
The MV YWAM PNG is currently restocking in Port Moresby before sailing to Middle Fly district, Western Province this weekend for her next patrol.
