Woolworths stores across Townsville are helping to get the YWAM Medical Ship ship-shape for her return to Papua New Guinea by collecting toothbrushes, toothpaste and soap for remote communities in Papua New Guinea. The collection is sponsored by 1300SMILES.
Townsville’s YWAM Medical Ship, the MV YWAM PNG, is in Townsville for two months of maintenance and re-stocking before she returns to PNG at the end of next month for her next deployment.
YWAM Medical Ships spokesperson, Anna Scott, said that the Townsville community are invited to help be a part of re-stocking the MV YWAM PNG before she leaves Townsville’s shores.
“We are aiming to collect over 7,000 toothbrushes, toothpaste and soap before the end of next month.
“Often times toothbrushes, toothpaste and soap are simply not available in the communities we go to. Our teams of volunteers will distribute the items alongside our health education programs in remote villages, particularly amongst children.
“The Woolworths stores serve as an excellent collection point for those that would like to contribute,” said Ms Scott.
YWAM Medical Ships School Ambassadors have kicked off the giving by contributing toothbrushes, toothpaste and soap collected amongst their schools.
Woolworths Group Manager 502, Richard Matthews, said they were proud to be supporting the campaign.
“We’re very privileged to have a medical ship based in our city that goes out and serves alongside our nearest international neighbours.
“We are happy to be a part of helping to see Townsville’s YWAM Medical Ship return to PNG in this small way – we hope the Townsville community rally behind this collection drive to help meet the goal,” said Mr Matthews.
Collection boxes for toothbrushes, toothpaste and soap are in every Woolworths store in Townsville until July 19.
