Over 180 year nine students from Ignatius Park College visited the YWAM Medical Ships Townsville Campus yesterday to learn about community service and volunteerism.
The YWAM Medical Ships City Campus serves as a dynamic hub for registered training, youth work, community radio station, 99.9 Live FM, and the headquarters for the YWAM Medical Ship that delivers healthcare and training to remote areas in Papua New Guinea.
The campus also accommodates over 500 volunteers and students.
During the visit, students had the opportunity to tour the campus while learning more about Papua New Guinea’s culture through dance, music, and interactive displays and activities.
Ignatius Park College Retreats Coordinator, Mr Greg Christ, said the students enjoyed the visit.
“A group of students had a similar visit to the YWAM Campus last year, we received great feedback.
“YWAM’s young volunteers’ passion and strong values make them inspiring role models for our students – they have a unique way of connecting with students through culture, creative arts, sports and their commitment to service.
“As a school, we believe in helping students grow not only academically, but also socially. Exposing our students to charities and organisations that are dedicated to building communities is important to us,” said Mr Christ.
YWAM Medical Ships Communications Manager, Anna Scott, said it was wonderful to have the opportunity to host the students.
“It has always been our desire to utilise our campus to help serve local young people.
“We are grateful to have the opportunity to not only share about the work we do, but to also help inspire the students to consider how they can make a difference in other peoples lives,” said Ms Scott.
The YWAM City Campus (formerly Barrier Reef TAFE) was acquired by YWAM in 2013. The re-developments on the property have included the construction of dormitory-style accommodation for students, apartments for full-time volunteers, a dining room and café, recording studios, auditorium and classroom facilities.
The YWAM Medical Ship, MV YWAM PNG, will return to Townsville from Papua New Guinea at the end of May for two months of maintenance and YWAM’s annual event, “Breakfast by the Sea”, to book tickets visit www.ywamtownsville-org.staging.precedence.com.au/bbts/
