Setting its sights on improving vision in other parts of the world, Specsavers Narellan is calling on the community to bring pre-loved glasses in store so they can be hand-delivered to people in need in Papua New Guinea.
Passionate about providing expert care to communities living in remote areas, Specsavers Narellan Optometrist, Theresa Bui will be recycling the reglazed glasses while taking part in a medical outreach trip to Papua New Guinea from 20 April – 7 May.
The trip is organised by Youth with a Mission (YWAM) Medical Ships, a charity that offers health care and training to remote areas in Papua New Guinea. Theresa and a team of YWAM volunteers will receive cultural training before visiting communities only accessible by boat. During the visit they will administer eye screenings and examinations, referrals and dispense glasses.
YWAM Medical Ships Public Relations Manager, Anna Scott, says, “Delivering basic services in Papua New Guinea poses enormous challenges with 84% of the population living in remote, rural areas. We are very grateful not only to the Narellan community for donating their glasses to be recycled for the project, but also to Theresa for raising awareness on YWAM’s work in PNG. She will be offering her professional skills on a trip that will see her provide eye care to communities who may have never seen an optometrist in their life. Theresa’s work will be invaluable to many people living in PNG’s remote areas, we are pleased to have her on board.”
Specsavers Narellan Optometrist, Theresa Bui, says, “Having worked in optometry for over four years, I was keen to develop my clinical skills by helping people in remote areas where optometry services are expensive and difficult to access. We are very lucky to live in a country where eye care is subsidised and readily available to those experiencing problems with their sight. I am looking forward to meeting the people that are living in PNG’s remote communities and really hope my expertise will help improve the vision and lives of others.
“Myself and the team at Specsavers Narellan would like to ask the local community to check for any pre-loved prescription and reading glasses that might be lying around at home and donate them to our Papua New Guinea neighbours. Every pair collected will make a huge difference to the lives of those suffering from poor eyesight and will provide individuals with a clearer, brighter future.” says Theresa.
