Over fifty people from the National Youth Development Authority (NYDA) and other government departments witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Youth with a Mission (YWAM) and the NYDA onboard YWAM’s Training and Medical Ship, the MV YWAM PNG, in Port Moresby yesterday afternoon.
The purpose of the MOU is to establish a respectful and collaborative working relationships between NYDA and YWAM for the purposes of engaging and strengthening Papua New Guinean youth at the centre of sustainable development.
The Director General for NYDA, Mr Norit Luio, said that church-based organisations are a vital and strategic partner in empowering youth to live lives of purpose.
“We have already seen great outcomes from the work of YWAM amongst our young people through the work of their Training and Medical Ship and land-based teams in rural and remote areas, we are looking forward to expanding this on a greater level,” said Mr Norit.

NYDA and YWAM have a common vision to transform and empower youth for nation building in PNG, and desire to attain the goals and principles enshrined in the National Youth Policy of Papua New Guinea 2007 – 2017.
NYDA and YWAM’s relationship will include collaboration on skills-based training, character development and volunteering opportunities in PNG’s rural areas.
YWAM Medical Ships Managing Director, Mr Ken Mulligan, said that the signing of the MoU yesterday was a step toward empowering Papua New Guinean youth in a greater way.
“We’ve been involved in youth development for over 50 years, our heart and passion is to see young people find their purpose and place in life.
“I strongly believe that Papua New Guinea’s greatest resource is its people – we are grateful for the opportunity to work alongside the NYDA in achieving great outcomes together,” said Mr Mulligan.
Further discussions in regard to action plans between YWAM and the NYDA will be taking place over the coming months.
YWAM’s Training and Medical Ship is in Port Moresby until Saturday before sailing to the Gulf Province for its first outreach for 2016. A strong contingency of young Papua New Guineans are onboard, including three cadets from Consort Express Limited who will be gaining experience alongside YWAM Medical Ships volunteer deck officers and engineering team.
