Cadets participating in the Steamships Sponsorships Cadet program have joined YWAM’s new Training and Medical Ship, the MV YWAM PNG for 13 weeks to gain sea time and experience as part of their maritime training.
The three cadets joined the MV YWAM PNG’s crew three weeks ago in Cairns – working on the vessel as it underwent dry dock and routine maintenance work.
Steamships DPA/Marine Quality and Crewing Manager, Captain Krys Orlowski, said that working on the MV YWAM PNG gives their cadets the opportunity to work alongside multinational, experienced seafarers that will strengthen them for the future.
“Aside from the practical experience our cadets will be receiving, the vessel is also a wonderful environment for our young cadets – YWAM’s volunteers have a passion for PNG and a desire to serve – as a company, these are character qualities that we want to see our employees exposed to,” said Mr Orlowski.
The MV YWAM PNG will depart Cairns for PNG this weekend for an initial 9-week deployment in the Southern Region and Huon Gulf.
The cadets will travel to remote villages in Gulf, Western, Central, Milne Bay, Oro and Morobe provinces.
YWAM MSA’s Managing Director, Ken Mulligan, said that it was the MV YWAM PNG’s maiden voyage to PNG.
“Steamships are one of our major sponsors – they’ve given us generous financial and logistical support since 2011.”
“It’s a joy to have their cadets onboard for the MV YWAM PNG’s first ever voyage into Papua New Guinea’s waters.”
“We are incredibly grateful for Steamships’ ongoing partnership – its wonderful to see that expanding through their training program – the cadets have been a real asset to have onboard,” said Mr Mulligan.
The MV YWAM PNG will be officially commissioned in Port Moresby on Tuesday evening before sailing to the Gulf and Western Provinces for the first outreach of the season. Attendees include YWAM MSA’s PNG Patron, the Right Honourable Sir Rabbie Namaliu and Minister for National Planning, Honourable Charles Abel.
