The year of 2014 was one of our most exciting, challenging years yet as we sent the MV Pacific Link to Papua New Guinea (PNG) for the last time and acquired a new ship for PNG, the MV YWAM PNG.
The year was labeled “Overcoming the Impossible” as we set out to raise $5.5 million in five months to purchase a new training and medical ship for PNG. On December 4th, the vessel was officially purchased and the impossible was overcome!
The campaign included a tour of the east coast of Australia with the new vessel. Our goal was to raise awareness about PNG’s critical health needs, recruit volunteers, and raise funds to purchase the vessel. Over five months the ship visited eight ports between Cairns and Sydney.
It was truly a remarkable journey as thousands of people in both Australia and PNG of all ages rallied behind the cause and helped us overcome the impossible.
Our team is busy planning for the year ahead as we start the refit of the vessel and plan to take her to PNG for the first time in March.
Below is a snapshot of what was achieved:
18,408 people attended tours and events aboard the vessel
1,100 people registered their interest in volunteering
8,865 students were educated about the health challenges in PNG
4 million people were reached through the media campaign
