The Introduction to Global Health & Development course (IGHD) is a course designed to train you in health promotion, rural and remote first aid, basic health care and community development principles.

The IGHD is for those who have a heart to see communities thrive physically, socially, emotionally, and spiritually. During the course, you will be immersed in a powerful combination of essential basic healthcare knowledge and community development training, with a focus on preventing illness, promoting holistic wellbeing, and empowering communities to develop their strengths.

It is a six month course that will run from our recently established YWAM Medical Ships campus in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. Where you will undergo 12 weeks of training before applying what you have learned during 10 weeks of outreach in Papua New Guinea.

On completion of this course you will have attained an Australian qualification for basic healthcare; Certificate III in Basic Health Care (HLT31220) and Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (HLTAID009), Provide First Aid in remote or isolated site (HLTAID013) and Provide Advanced First Aid (HLTAID014).

The prerequisite for this course is you need to have completed Grade 10 in PNG or the equivalent in your home country & YWAM’s foundational course, the Discipleship Training School (DTS).

6,000 PGK course fee + outreach travel expenses – C nation price
12,800 PGK course fee + outreach travel expenses – B nation price
15,800 PGK course fee + outreach travel expenses – A nation price

Your course fee includes 12 weeks of missions training and 10 weeks of outreach. The training includes all of your meals, accommodation, laundry facilities, airport transfers. Your outreach includes all of your meals, accommodation, outreach shirt, and field supplies.

Your outreach travel expenses will cover variable costs such as flights, ferries, busses, etc.

All international students studying in Papua New Guinea are required to obtain Health & Travel Insurance. For A&B nation students, course fees include Health & Travel Insurance cover for the duration of the course.

Does not include travel costs to and from Port Moresby, visa, and immunisations.

On completion, you’ll be equipped with a nationally recognised Certificate III in Basic Health Care, plus additional first aid qualifications.

Course Work

The Introduction to Global Health and Development is a combination of health care knowledge, practical skills and Christian missions. There is also a component of written assignments and practical assessments. Our assessments utilise a range of methods including: journals, workbooks, skills reports, skills checklists and supervisor reports. The IGHD is holistic in nature and units of competency are delivered concurrently, enabling you to develop your skills, knowledge and character.

Applicants need to have completed a Discipleship Training School and have a sense of call to Christian missions prior to acceptance into this course.
