On Monday, July 23, 2012, YWAM Medical Ships Australia (MSA) offered tours for the first time to the general public in PNG.
The aim of the tours was to show residents of the capitol city, Port Moresby, what YWAM are doing in their local and remote villages. Port Moresby is a sister-city to Townsville, where the vessel is based when not operating in PNG, and has hosted the ship between its trips to rural and remote Gulf and Western Province regions for three years running.
With a steady stream of over 150 people throughout the day, the onboard tour guides were kept on the on their feet, as the locals came in to inspect the ship.Captain Jeremy Shierer, shared both YWAM MSA’s, and the ships history and treated visitors to an inspection of the wheelhouse. They were then ushered to the starboard side of the ship, being taken past the working dental clinic on their way to the Aft Deck, where they were told more about the individual clinics and services that YWAM MSA provide. A short recap video highlighting YWAM MSA’s last few years in PNG was then shown, in which the locals took great delight to see the education and services that are being provided to their rural communities.
Both the YWAM team and the PNG locals agreed it was a wonderful initiative to open the ships doors, to assist in spreading the word of the great work that is being done within the nation.
